Trailer Analysis

The typical code and conventions in a film trailer are the names of the main characters, key moments from the film, the name of the film showed at the end, the names of directors and/or producers, on-screen texts, powerful voice-overs and music. My trailer that I have been analysing has some of these conventions. My trailer has key moments in the film that are not placed in order, the name of the film, the director of the film and on-screen texts. My trailer also has music but it doesn’t have a voice-over.

My film trailer’s target audience is teenagers and young adults. In my opinion the unique selling point of the film is the main character Mark Wahlberg since he is very popular and very attractive. Also the star that acts alongside Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel is also a popular icon. She is also a very attractive celebrity among the men of the population. The release date along with the film title is shown at the end of the trailer. The title will strike a memory in the audience as they will remember a part of the trailer where a character says “this is happening”. The trailer doesn’t give off any clues about the narrative. What they audience will automatically think is that there is some sort of alien invasion. In my opinion the scenes seem to be in order in a sense. You are able to tell the beginning easily but as the trailer carries on you will see that some scenes are before other ones in the actual film but are after other scenes in the trailer. The main characters are clearly visible as they are seen in nearly every scene in the trailer. There is not much info on the director apart from telling you what other films the director has done.

The genre of the film is represented through the characters because throughout the trailer the characters seem to be in distress and scared of something. The setting of the film in the trailer is eerie as well as empty. This is because in a place where it should be occupied by people it isn’t and many people are running to more secluded areas and into abandoned houses. The lighting on the other hand doesn’t show any distress meaning that the lighting is normal but in places the lighting is dark where normally in other trailers it is usually light. I say that the colour remains normal and doesn’t show any differences in the trailer itself. There is no music in some parts but where there is music it is timed with a scene that will make the audience jump and the music has like a foreboding sound signifying that something bad will happen probably in the next scene. This is also timed with scenes where what happens next is going to be scary. The camera angles are mostly close-ups showing the actors faces and usually what expression they have.

Between the poster and the trailer, I get more information from the trailer because the poster only shows at least two actors that will star in the film and the background of where majority of the film will take place. On the other hand the trailer shows who else will be staring in it and what roles they are going to play. This whether they are the main antagonist or protagonist or whether they have a brief appearance. Also the different scenes and the music that are played in the trailer reveal more information without giving away the initial plot of the film. This helps you widen your horizon and have a more complex idea of the film. The extra information you get from the film is what other characters act in the film and also general idea of what happens in the film. Because of this, it makes the film more desirable.

The advantages of using an internet trailer to promote a film are that it will be more aesthetically pleasing. When the audience gets an idea of what the film is about they also would like to know how it plays out throughout the film. Furthermore people spend loads of time on the internet and so the trailer will get more views than on T.V.

I think the film is a Thriller and Action (disaster) because the mise-en-scene has only three people who look scared. Their body language suggests that they are trying to shield themselves from something unseen. The setting has an ominous feeling to it, also giving another clue to what the genre might be.

I think the suggested storyline of the film is that everyone somehow disappears one day and the three only survivors find a way to survive.

The title has been made this way because the film has an eerie feeling to it so to have a standard looking title fits to make the audience think about what the film could be.

No stereotypes have been used in the cover of the film. The man and the women with the child have been represented in a particular way. The way they have been represented is by looking scared.

The representation of the setting of the film is that it looks eerie and mysterious. This help to suggest the storyline because the first impression the audience gets is that it might have something to do with alien invaders which sometimes is classified as a thriller.

Who I think will be interested in seeing this film are teenagers to adults. The main character, Matt Damon, will be the selling point of this film because he is well liked and many women find him attractive.

Film Plan

 

1. The title of my film is called Stuck Down Under.

2. My film is going to be set in Australia because it is mostly covered in earth so earthquakes and caves (which will be the main narrative of my story) is most likely to take place somewhere there.

3. The basic narrative of my film will be a big group of americans with a few teenagers will be having a little camping trip in the caves where water runs underground but a few times a year the whole tunnel floods but then a severe earthquake hits them blocking the main exit and causing more underground water to flood the cave more faster so they must find another way out before another earthquake hits them completely trapping them and killing them. They have a limited time of 7 ½ hours to escape.

4. The sub-plot of my story is that group of people that fight for survival don't really like each other and them being trapped together and having to work with each they will have to settle their differences. There will possibly be some romance as well.

5. There will be the character that knows a lot about caves and leads the rest of the group to safety, a character who will sacrifice anybody to get themselves to safety, a voice of concern, a spoilt one, a tomboy and an unsure character.

7. The 'big' themes that are going to be explored by my film are nature's revenge.

8. The 'small' themes I will probably explore are romance, teamwork and redemption.
